Genesis GV60 Magma unveiled after intense successful global testing programme
Genesis has dropped a camouflaged image of its GV60 Magma – the hot version of its GV60 SUV hatchback – ahead of its European release later this year.
The South Korean firm’s first ever high-performance model, the GV60 Magma appears to reflect the design of the track-inspired concept previewed by Genesis in 2024. This means that the Magma gets a wider, lower bodykit, and a more aggressive front end over the standard GV60. Like the concept, the roadgoing GV60 Magma has a rear wing stretching the width of the boot.
The Genesis GV60 Magma’s globe-trotting testing schedule began in the icy plains of Arjeplog, Sweden, to examine how the upcoming flagship would handle sub-zero temperatures. The car – along with its team of engineers – then headed to the California Proving Ground in the United States to see the effects extreme heat has on power output, cooling efficiency, and thermal protection.
The programme then took the GV60 Magma to the much cooler climate of the Southern Hemisphere Proving Ground in New Zealand. At 1,500 metres above sea level, Genesis engineers tested the car’s chassis precision, traction stability and braking robustness on icy, wind-swept terrain, to ensure stability when cornering at high speeds.
The final part of the gruelling agenda concluded on home turf in South Korea this September with a series of real-world and performance tests. The GV60 Magma was driven from the Namyang R&D Centre across motorways, mountain roads, and inner city environments to Chuncheon, some 40 miles away. Things wrapped up at the Inje Speedium Circuit, where further vehicle dynamics tests were carried out.
Given the regular Genesis GV60 shares the same electric-only E-GMP platform with the Hyundai Ioniq 5 N, it is expected that the Magma will receive the same 641bhp, twin-motor system as its sister car. The 89kWh battery is also expected to be carried over, allowing for 278 miles from a single charge.
It is not known whether Genesis will bring over the simulated gearshifts and engine noise from the Ioniq 5 N and the larger Ioniq 6 N.
Pricing for the Genesis GV60 Magma has yet to be confirmed, but reports suggest that given the regular GV60 can cost up to around £77,000 when specced up, then the upcoming flagship could hit the market with a £100,000 pricetag.
