Big battery Renault 4, 5, and Alpine A290 now available with £3,750 Electric Car Grant

The Renault Group has announced that 52kWh battery versions of its award-winning Renault 4, 5, and Alpine A290 hot-hatch are now available with the UK Government’s full £3,750 Electric Car Grant (ECG).

To qualify for the full grant, carmakers must meet the government’s Science-Based Target Initiative (SBTI) and strigent environmental critera related to vehicle and battery production carbon emissions.

The ECG is divided into two bands: band one cars qualify for the £3,750 discount, while band two cars benefit from a £1,500 discount. Having already met the first band earlier in 2025, Renault has now met the band one threshold thanks to its Douai EV gigafactory where the batteries are made.

Trim levels eligible for the £3,750 price cut are all Renault 5s with the ‘+’ designation, signifying they come with the 52kwh battery as opposed to the smaller 40kWh unit. This sees the price of the cheapest R5 in techno+ trim cut from £27,695 to £23,945. The iconic five+ is the Renault 5 range-topper, and is now available for £25,945 with the Electric Car Grant applied. The tennis-inspired, limited edition Roland Garros+ model, which is based on the iconic trim, now gets a £26,945 pricetag.

Each R5+ is capable of up to 250 miles from a single charge. Moreover, all R5+ cars will now receive standard trim enhancements: techno+ versions will come with a contrasting black roof, while iconic five+ and Roland Garros+ versions will benefit from  a Harman Kardon sound system.

Following Renault’s meeting of the SBTI threshold, the entry-level 52kWh Renault 4 crossover – the evolution+ – sees its starting price dropped from £27,195 to £23,445. The mid-range techno+ now comes in at £25,495 with the Electric Car Grant applied, while the flagship techno+ is reduced from just under £30,000 to £25,945. Not dissimilar to the R5, the Renault 4 with the larger battery has a maximum driving range of 247 miles.

On the back of yet another EV win for the French manufacturer in 2025, Renault UK managing director, Adam Wood, said: “Renault is committed to democratising car ownership. With the Renault 5, Renault 4, and soon the new Twingo, we are expanding the appeal of electric cars to more people, offering great design and competitive technology at highly accessible prices.

“We are pleased to see that our focus on environmental accountability and investment in made-in-Europe battery manufacturing has been recognised by the awarding of the top-tier Electric Car Grant. Since the grant was introduced we have seen momentum build in the market, and this decision will further boost the UK’s rising EV sales even further.”

The R5’s sporty cousin, the Alpine A290 also became more affordable courtesy of the full ECG. With the £3,750 factored in, the base GT+ model is now priced at £30,245 as opposed to £33,995. The mid-range GT Performance+ is reduced from £36,495 to £32,745, while the full-bodied GTS+ now comes with a £34,245 pricetag instead of £37,995.

Alpine UK chief, Nicola Burnside added: “Earning the full £3,750 grant eligibility is fantastic news, and I’ve no doubt will accelerate the already amazing interest we have in the award-winning Alpine A290.

“We’ve moved quickly to ensure that customers can take advantage of the saving and place orders for the updated ‘+’ range from the moment the £3,750 Electric Car Grant has been confirmed by the Government, with deliveries set to begin early next year.”

As well as the new pricing structure, the Alpine A290’s updates include two UK specific option packs called Tricolore Design and Signature Tricolor. The former adds in a blue steering wheel centre with the Alpine logo and a French tricolor on the car’s exterior, while the latter brings intelligent cruise control, hands-free parking, plus blind spot and reverse parking monitoring.
