Is a Ford Fiesta EV on its way?

Ford has announced it will expand its full all-electric and hybrid car line-up in 2027 with two new models, fuelling speculation that its best-selling Fiesta supermini could return as an EV.

In a message sent to its German dealer network and seen by industry publication Automobilwoche, Ford’s head of brand for German-speaking countries, Christoph Herr, revealed the brand’s mid-term plans.

According to Herr’s message, Ford will “invest in several vehicles, some of them together with partners and also with different forms of propulsion, including hybrids and fully electric vehicles.”

His comments open the door for a new, Fiesta EV based on a Volkswagen platform. Already, the VW Group shares its dedicated, all-electric MEB architecture with the Blue Oval for its all-electric Explorer and the Capri; the latter of which was revived as an EV last year.

While Herr did not name any specific partners, the existing relationship between Wolfsburg and the Blue Oval theoretically means that a Fiesta EV based on the upcoming ID.2 could be on the cards.

The VW Polo-sized ID.2 is set for arrival later this year, and is set to be built on a modified version of the MEB architecture, which it will share with the upcoming Cupra Raval and the Skoda Epiq.

The ID.2 is expected to cost around £20,000 and several unconfirmed reports have said it may even go by the ID.Polo name. VW, however, has confirmed that the ID.2 will be available with either a 38kWh or a 58kWh battery – the latter of which returns a 280 mile range from a single charge.

Meanwhile, fast-charging capabilities give the ID.2 charging speeds of up to 125kW, meaning it can be charged from 10% to 80% in under 30 minutes.

Following the backlash Ford encountered after it revived the Capri as an all-electric crossover, it would make sense to pair up with VW for a Fiesta EV.

Moreover, the Fiesta was a beloved nameplate – in the UK especially – prior to its axing in 2023.

Following its arrival in 1976, Ford sold over 22 million Fiestas globally and remains the country’s all-time bestselling car, with over 4.1 units shifted during its life. Even earlier this year, it was still the country’s top-selling used car with 306,207 second-hand examples purchased in 2024.
