Volvo EX60 brings 503-mile range and 400kW charging

The upcoming, all-electric Volvo EX60 promises a best-in-class range of 503 miles when it makes its public debut on January 21, later this month.

Rivalling the likes of the new BMW iX3 and the Mercedes GLC, the EX60 is built on the Swedish carmaker’s latest 800-volt, SPA3 electrical architecture, meaning it can onboard 200 miles worth of range in 10 minutes when using a 400kW rapid charger.

Furthermore, Volvo will build the EX60 using a mega casting system, replacing hundreds of smaller parts with a single, unitary, high-precision casting. This manufacturing process reduces weight, paving the way for even more range.

While Volvo has yet to confirm the EX60’s battery options, we know that the battery is integrated into the body. Again, this leads to a reduction in weight and improved efficiency, as do Volvo’s in-house developed e-motors.

The battery’s efficiency is also managed by Volvo’s Breathe Battery Technologies, which uses a series of dedicated algorithms to adjust how the battery manages its power. This ensures that the battery remains within its ideal operating window at all times, irrespective of the weather conditions.

Its 503-mile range is exclusive to the all-wheel drive variant of the Volvo EX60. Nonetheless, it takes the crown for the electric Volvo with the longest range.

The recently released ES90 saloon runs it close, as it can manage 435 miles on a single charge, while the updated EX90 SUV has a range of 380 miles. Further down Gothenburg’s EV range, the smaller EX30 and EX40 pack 296 and 355-mile range respectively.

Ahead of its debut, Volvo chief technology officer, Andreas Bell, described the EX60 as a “game-changer”.

“The EX60 is designed to be a game-changer,” he said. “With our new electric vehicle architecture, we directly address the main worries that customers have when considering a switch to a fully electric car. The result is class-leading range and fast charging speeds, marking the end of range anxiety.”

Pricing for the EX60 will be announced upon arrival, but it is expected to cost roughly the same as the current XC60 hybrid, which starts at £56,760.
