End of the road: Volkswagen rumoured to axe ID.5 for 2027

VW could be set to kill off its ID.5 EV within 18 months, according to new reports.

Production of the coupe-SUV cousin to the ID.4 could cease for the 2027 model year after poor sales performance since its launch, according to Autocar.

The title cited VW insiders as confirming that along with the internal combustion-engined Touareg, ID.5 production will discontinue at the end of 2026.

Following its launch as a sleeker partner to the ID.4  in 2021, the ID.5 has failed to gain traction with customers, unlike the ID.3, ID.4, and ID.7 – all of which rank amongst the best-selling EVs in Europe.

The discontinuation of the ID.5 will free up VW to add more fully-electric models to its line-up in the coming years as part of its EV blitz. Earlier in 2025, VW CEO, Thomas Schäfer, announced that the brand aims to have EVs account for 70% of its sales in Europe by 2030.

The Wolfsburg-based carmaker has already announced that an electrified version of the Polo, the ID.2, will be joining the range in 2026.

The T-Cross replacement, the ID.2X crossover, is set to debut at this year’s Munich motor show in September, while an ID.2 GTI is expected to arrive at the end of next year. An ID.2 Clubsport GTI and ID.2 R are also rumoured to be in the pipeline, with the latter touted to receive in-wheel motor tech from Rimac.

VW has confirmed that a new, all-electric answer to the now-discontinued e-Up! – the ID.Every1 – will come to market in 2027. By 2029 at the very latest, the Mk9 Golf is expected to be reinvented as an EV.

Regarding the ID.5 discontinuation rumours, EV Powered reached out to Volkswagen who declined to to comment on what it called ‘speculation’ about its future product plans.
