UK start-up aims to bolster used EV sales with battery-health assessment tech

A UK-based start-up has revealed a new battery health check that it says will help boost car buyers’ and sellers’ confidence in used electric cars.

Generational says its system will help buyers make the right choices as well as helping dealers assess and sell cars quicker as the UK’s used EV market continues to boom.

Recent data published by the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) showed that demand for used EVs has jumped 57% year-on-year from 2024 to 2025. Of all of the 7,643,180 cars sold in the UK last year, 188,382 were EVs. However, of the more than 3,000 car dealerships in the UK, less than 40% currently list a single pre-owned EV, partly due to a lack of knowledge and confidence among dealers.

Generational’s founders aim to address that by offering a simple assessment of any pre-owned EV.

Generational works by plugging a small device into an EV’s OBD port, which then securely analyses the vehicle’s data to accurately determine its battery’s state of health before it’s acquired by the dealer.

The result is presented as a percentage of its condition compared to new and benchmarked against the manufacturer’s original data. The state-of-health figure is complemented by real-range assessment.

Oliver Phillpott, the Generational CEO said: “While the UK’s used electric-vehicle market is showing hugely encouraging signs of growth, that success needs to be sustainable in the long-term. From our experience with our customers, it’s clear that vehicle dealers’, and consumers’, confidence in pre-owned EVs needs to be uplifted.

EV battery health is a concern amongst buyers

“In working with our customers and speaking to dealers across the country, we’re acutely aware that battery state-of-health is a critical concern for them and buyers. They need access to simple, transparent information to help them make a fully informed investment in electric vehicles, and that’s what we’re committed to doing.”

Used car supermarket Carbase is among the first to use Generational’s technology. Alex Jones, Carbase COO added: “Partnering with Generational has been a seamless experience. Their professional team integrated their system into our existing processes without disrupting daily operations. The intuitive software was quickly adopted by our team, enabling us to certify hundreds of electric vehicles efficiently.

“This has led to a remarkable 300% increase in ad views for our electric vehicles, enhancing customer trust and confidence in our stock. The certification process also provides valuable insights that support both retail and wholesale decision-making, reinforcing our commitment to quality and sustainability.”

Generational’s service is similar to that introduced by leading vehicle remarketer BCA last year. BCA carries out a battery health check on EVs before they go to trade auction. The aim is to give dealers a clear picture of the health of any EV they are considering, as well as providing a simple report that can be shared with any potential retail customer.
