Nissan pairs with Octopus Energy for next-gen Nissan Charge app

Nissan has teamed up with Octopus Energy for the latest version of its Nissan Charge app as it pivots towards its Ambition 2030 vision, which sees the brand aim for 50% electrification by the start of the next decade.

In-line with the launch of all-electric models including the new Micra, Leaf, and an upcoming, yet-to-be-named city car, the tie-up sees Octopus Energy’s Electroverse software underpin the Nissan Charge app. In doing so, it gives Nissan EV drivers access to over a million charge points operated by some 1,200 charge point operators (CPOs) across Europe. The CPOs featured within the app include Ionity, TotalEnergies, Allego, and Aral.

Moreover, around 500 chargers are added daily to the Nissan Charge app. Moreover, the app includes functions to support day-to-day driving and long-distance journeys including real-time information to optimise charging costs.

Like the ZapMap app, Nissan also gives users the option to identify real-time charger availability, charging speed an plug type, plus reduced charging costs through participating CPOs.

In the future, the Nissan Charge app will include Tesla Supercharger-style ‘Plug & Charge’ functionality. This sees the vehicle communicate directly with compatible charging stations, and eliminate the need for a charger-specific app or a charging card. Vehicle-to-Grid (V2G) functionality will also be available somewhere down the line.

V2G enables EV owners to significantly slash their home charging costs, by enabling their car batteries to support grid stabilisation and feed energy back to the grid when required. In short, the EV’s battery acts as a mobile energy storage device. This technology can also see EVs power various electrical household items, plus act as a power source to support homes and communities during power cuts.

“The new Nissan Charge app is an important step in our mission to make electric driving seamless and accessible,” said Nissan Energy’s director, Soufiane El Khomri. “By introducing future-ready features, we’re not only helping drivers connect to Europe’s vast charging network, but we’re also laying the foundation for EVs to play an active role in the energy system of tomorrow.

“It aligns perfectly with our electrification journey, from our EV36Zero initiative to the exciting arrival of our next-generation models like the all-new Micra and Leaf.”

Octopus Electroverse director, Matt Davies, added: “For the first time, Electroverse’s technology has been integrated into another brand’s charging app — and we’re thrilled to see that debut with Nissan.”

“As EVs become mainstream, drivers want a charging experience as smart as their vehicle. By bringing our cutting-edge technology into the Nissan Charge app, we’re delivering the best of Electroverse – simple access to 80% of all chargers across Europe, money-saving discounts, and quick, hassle-free payments.”
