Nissan confirms all-electric twin to Renault Twingo

Nissan has announced that it will introduce a small electric EV based on the Renault Twingo, fuelling speculation that both cars will be produced in right-hand drive for UK buyers.

The news comes on the back of Renault Group and Nissan’s new strategic projects announcement, which will oversee the Japanese car manufacturer’s revival plan following its recent financial difficulties and failed merger with Honda.

Nissan’s Twingo twin will be based on Renault’s bespoke AmpR Small EV platform (known as CMF-BEV at Nissan), which also underpins the Renault 5. Despite the confirmation of the car’s electrical architecture, no further technical details have been made public.

The Twingo sibling’s manufacture will mirror that of the recently-announced Nissan Micra and Nissan Juke crossover. Both are based on the Renault 5, but will be built in Sunderland by the time they arrive in 2026. The Micra and the Juke will be EV only.

This approach will align with Nissan’s move to reduce the time it takes to bring new vehicles to market, and slash its development costs and time.

The new Micra EV will go into production later in 2025

“Renault Group has a strong interest in seeing Nissan turnaround its performance as quickly as possible,” said Renault Group CEO, Luca de Meo. “This agreement, beneficial for both parties, is the proof of the agile and efficient mindset of the new [Renault-Nissan] Alliance. It also confirms the attractiveness of our products with the Twingo.”

Ivan Espinosa, Nissan CEO and president added: “Nissan is committed to preserving the value and benefits of our strategic partnership within the Alliance while implementing turnaround measures to enhance efficiencies.

“Our goal is to create a more agile and effective business model that allows us to respond quickly to changing market conditions and conserve cash for future investments.”

Since its move to electrification, Renault’s EV line-up has been well-received by consumers. In addition to the Renault 5, the Megane E-Tech and Scenic are also multiple award winners.
