New EDF tariffs remove upfront charger costs
Two new EDF tariffs have made making the switch to an EV more affordable by reducing the upfront costs of a home charger to zero.
With EDF’s three-year Pod Drive EV charging subscription, drivers can spread the entire cost of the Pod Point Solo 3S 7.4kW home charger (RRP £999) by paying £40 per month. What’s more, the Pod Drive package does away with the charger’s £99 installation cost and includes up to £172.50 of ongoing cashback if customers opt for the ‘Smart Charging’ add-on.
To ensure peace of mind, Pod Drive comes with a 48-hour repair or replace service with 24/7 customer support and a lifetime warranty.
The Pod Drive subscription is offered in partnership with two EV-specific tarrifs. The first, named ‘Go Electric’, is aimed at drivers who regularly charge overnight. EDF says it is able to save EV drivers up to £280 each year, thanks to five hours of off-peak electricity costing 9p per kilowatt hour each night from 12am to 5am.
The second tariff, ‘Evolve’ is designed for drivers who don’t charge each night and promises savings of up to £195 annually. It comes with a tracker tariff that follows the Ofgen price cap SVT, and like ‘Go Electric’, promises a five hours of off-peak electricity each night even with variable pricing.
Rich Hughes, EDF retail director, said: “Pod Drive is a major step forward in making EV ownership easier and more affordable for drivers by removing the upfront costs of getting a charger and allowing customers to spread it across a longer term, much like a phone contract.”
The best and cheapest home EV charging tariffs can offer EV drivers significant savings on the charging compared with energy companies’ standard tariffs. Off-peak charging costs can be as little as 6.75p/kWh. However, EDF Evolve comes in as one of the more expensive options costing 14.86p/kWh off-peak and 24.86p/kWh during peak hours.
