Fastned plans UK-first indoor charging hub in Aberdeen

Public charging operator Fastned has revealed plans for the UK’s first fully indoor ultra-rapid charging hub.

The Netherlands-based network has lodged plans to convert a disused warehouse in Aberdeen into a 12-bay hub complete with shop, toilets and seating area.

The proposed scheme will see the Grampian House warehouse on Virginian Street converted to house a dozen ‘drive-thru’ chargers offering up to 400kW – enough to add 100 miles of range in five minutes. Solar panels will be installed on the roof to provide renewable energy to help power the site.

The plan is part of Fastned’s strategy to add more urban locations to its ultra-rapid charging network. It reports a growing demand for fast charging in cities as residents, businesses and visitors seek a rapid recharge in central locations.

The Aberdeen site is just inside the city’s inner ring road and forms part of Fastned’s ambition to bring new use to industrial locations. If approved, it will be the UK’s first fully covered charging hub, offering drivers shelter from the wind and rain, as well as providing comfort and refreshment facilities.

Fastned says the planned Aberdeen facility will include a shop, toilets and sheltered seating area

“Aberdeen is at the heart of Scotland’s energy transition,” said Tom Hurst, UK country director at Fastned. “This charging hub is perfect for the EV drivers of Aberdeen.

“We’re optimistic that the city Council will see the benefit that the development will bring to the city and how it fits in with its wider decarbonisation strategy. This hub isn’t just about EV charging, it’s about showing what’s possible in an urban environment while making a clear commitment to a cleaner, greener city. We’re looking forward to hearing the final decision and to working with the council to make this hub a reality.”

Grampian House is owned by West Coast Estates, which is fully backing the Fastned proposal. West Cost Estates managing director Iftikar Mian commented: “We are thrilled to be partnering with Fastned on this groundbreaking project to bring the UK’s first indoor drive-thru ultra-rapid EV charging hub to Aberdeen.

“At West Coast Estates, we believe in transforming underused spaces into assets that benefit the community and support a more sustainable future. This innovative repurposing of Grampian House perfectly aligns with our vision for responsible regeneration and reflects Aberdeen’s ambition to lead Scotland’s energy transition.”
