Fastned and TfL get green light for first ultra-fast charging hub in west London
Fastned and Places for London have obtained planning permission for the first in a series of ultra-fast EV charging hubs in the Capital.
Work will get underway soon at the Hatton Cross station car park after the project obtained approval from the west London Borough of Hillingdon.
Scheduled to open in early 2026, the Hatton Park hub will be the first of five ultra-fast EV sites planned by the public/private joint venture of Fastned and Places for London – the former is a Europe-wide ultra-fast charge point operator; the latter the property-owning arm of Transport for London (TfL).
The Hatton Cross hub will deliver charging speeds of up to 400kW across 12 charging bays. The sites will also be accessible for disabled drivers with extra wide bays, while an additional two will be fully accessible as-per the latest British Standard Institution’s guidance on accessible charging. Each charging facility will be powered 100% by renewable energy.
TfL says that the new hubs will be sheltered by Fastned’s yellow solar canopy, which comes with CCTV for additional security. Users will also benefit from 24/7 multi-language customer support via app and phone, plus bathroom facilities.
According to TfL, London is ahead of the rest of the UK when it comes to EV adoption with around 193,000 electric cars and vans on the capital’s road. By 2030, EVs are estimated to make up 49% of London’s car and van fleet.
This would translate into the need for anywhere between 40,000 – 60,000 public charge points including 4,000 rapid chargers; a significant jump from the 21,600 installed to-date.
Emma Hatch, head of development at Places for London said: “We’re delighted that we have secured our first planning consent for this ultra-rapid EV charging hub.
“By delivering this infrastructure, we can help drivers confidently make the transition to cleaner vehicles knowing that a charging point is nearby. Like the Mayor of London and the London Borough of Hillingdon, we are dedicated to taking the necessary steps to ensure London is working towards a more sustainable and inclusive future.
“This is a great example of how we, as part of a public body, can work with the private sector to bring about the infrastructure London needs. We now look forward to drivers getting to charge up with ease at the hub by early 2026.”
Fastned UK country director, Tom Hurst, added: “This is another big step forward for London’s EV charging network, and is a testament to the efforts of Fastned and Places for London. The swift planning decision by London Borough of Hillingdon shows real commitment to the EV transition for the borough.
“It’s pragmatic decisions like these that allow us to roll out our high quality charging network across the capital and beyond, and to give London EV drivers the service that they have been waiting for.”
In 2022, Fastned opened its first London-based ultra-fast EV charging station in London. It is located just off the Woolwich Road (A206) near the Blackwall Tunnel in the London Borough of Greenwich.
