Co-op launches new Nissan electric hearses for Scottish funerals
Co-op Funeralcare in Scotland has introduced a new electric hearse, based off the Nissan Athena Electric, to its fleet.
The fully electric vehicle, which features the chassis of a Nissan Leaf EV and an exterior structure made from recycled composite materials, will serve communities across Edinburgh, including Dalkeith, Galashiels, Leith, Piershill, Musselburgh, Niddrie, North Berwick, Tranent and Sighthill.
Last year, Co-op Funeralcare introduced a Tesla Wisper to its fleet to serve communities in North and East London. As part of the move towards electric, the company also committed to installing electric vehicle charging points to Co-op Funeralcare care centres that open in 2022 and beyond.
The new hearses will join the operator’s existing fleet of hybrid ceremonials which launched back in 2020 following £4m investment.
In addition to the Tesla and Nissan models, Co-op Funeralcare is also introducing a private ambulance based on a Maxus van, which will be in operation across Scotland.
“We are excited to be bringing our fully electric Nissan hearse and private ambulance to Scotland to offer dignified, elegant and environmentally friendly services for families and communities in the area,” said Nic MacLennan, head of operations for Co-op Funeralcare in Scotland.
“We’re committed to leading the way in helping the bereaved and their loved ones have a final farewell that does not adversely impact the environment.”
