Audi has fully revealed the new Audi A2 for the first time, showcasing its smallest and cheapest EV a month of its UK launch.
Priced from around £32,000, the new electric A2 steals a march on electrified versions of the Mercedes A-Class and BMW 1 Series, and is set to face off against models from Mini, Volvo and Cupra.
Audi boss Gernot Döllner said the new model would deliver on customer demand for something “efficient, compact, and thoughtfully designed”, and make entry in Audi’s EV world easier than ever.
Based on the same MEB platform as everything from the Cupra Born to the Volkswagen ID.7, the new Audi A2 is built at the brand’s Ingolstadt home alongside the current petrol-powered A3, and offers a wide choice of motor and battery setups.
Audi A2 battery, motor and range
The new Audi A2 comes with three battery choices and four different motor options.
Entry-level cars feature a 168bhp rear-mounted motor which delivers 0-62mph in 8.8 seconds, and a 52kWh LFP battery. This will provide up to 262 miles of range and charge at up to 100kW.
Above that is the most efficient version of Audi’s most efficient car. Using a 187bhp motor and 61kWh LFP battery, this model can get from 0-62mph in 7.9 seconds and cover up to 320 miles on a charge thanks to efficiency of 4.85m/kWh. Peak DC charging increases slightly to 105kW.
The longest-range version of the new A2 uses an 84kWh NMC battery paired with a 229bhp motor to deliver up to 401 miles of range. That cuts the 0-62mph run to 7 seconds while a range-topping 322bhp version manages it in 5.7 seconds but cuts the range to 391 miles. Both get upgraded DC charging of 183kW, which keeps a 10-80% top-up under 30 minutes.
Audi A2 design
The electric A2 aims to honour the spirit of the quirky 1990s original and the links to its predecessor are clear in its design.
Like its all-aluminium forebear, the new A2’s exterior has been designed for efficiency with clean, simple lines and tight panel gaps. Like the original, the new A2 has almost arched profile view, short bonnet and near-vertical tailgate, along with short front and rear overhangs. The electric powertrain allows for an almost flat enclosed underbody and small touches such as active air intake shutters and breathers around the wheel arches aim to optimise air flow.
The A2’s short overhangs also help maximise space inside the 4.3-metre-long hatchback, which Audi says has been designed to be “spacious and welcoming”. Central to that is a new Softwrap finish – a soft, fabric-covered surface that extends across the dashboard, door panels and into the rear for a “warmer” interior look and feel.
Like other recent Audis, the A2’s controls are now centred on a new “switch module” behind the steering wheel which frees up space in the centre console. This features a lower open section and floating tray beneath the dashboard for wireless charging, and comes with the Fidlock magnetic mounting system for storage elements – a premium brand first.
Most controls are managed via the steering wheel, which uses a combination of touch-sensitive surfaces and physical rollers, or the central touchscreen. All versions of the electric A2 get the latest iteration of the Audi virtual cockpit on an 11.9-inch screen, accompanied by a 12.8-inch curved central touchscreen running Audi’s latest OS.
Like every new EV, there’s route planning built in but the A2’s has a couple of clever features up its sleeve. It allows for manual adjustment of the calculated charging time, so charging stops can be tailored to individual needs. It can also suggest an alternative route with fewer charging stops by adjusting the recommended driving speed, and displays the maximum speed at which the current route, including the planned charging stops, can be reliably completed.
Audi A2 price, trim and UK launch
The new Audi A2 will cost from £32,200 when order books open in October. First UK deliveries will be in early 2027.
Full UK specification will be confirmed nearer the car’s UK launch, but Audi has indicated there will be a “standard” exterior look or a sportier S line version with high-gloss exterior touches and unique paint options.
We know that adaptive Matrix LED lights, a panoramic sunroof, variable-rate steering and vehicle-to-load functionality will be optional extras, along with a 14-speaker Sonos sound system and enhanced driver assistance packages, but it’s not clear yet what different versions of the A2 will offer as standard.
