Formula E in talks with Zandvoort over Gen4 race; De Vries backs home event
Formula E is in talks with Zandvoort over a possible race from 2027 onwards when the coastal circuit’s deal expires with Formula 1 next year, reports Dutch F1 site RacingNews365.
When the 13th FE season begins in Sāo Paulo in December this year, the championship will embark on a record-breaking calendar with more races than ever. Moreover, the upcoming campaign will usher in the Gen4 car, which produces 800bhp and reached an F1-worrying 210mph during private testing.
While news about Formula E at Zandvoort remains speculation for now, the circuit’s owners were spotted in the FE paddock at the Berlin E-Prix. In 2021, the city of Eindhoven launched a failed bid to host a race.
When asked about a possible Zandvoort FE race, Formula E CEO, Jeff Dodds, confirmed that the all-electric, single-seater championship is considering racing at the beachside circuit from 2027 onwards.
“If you look at our target list of potential locations, […] I think next year is the last F1 race in Zandvoort,” he said. “If you look at that circuit layout, obviously it’s a beach circuit, but it’s a big circuit. If I look at it, with a few modifications, I think [Zandvoort] could be a really interesting circuit for Formula E.
“In fact, the people who run and own that circuit, they were in Berlin, talking to us about how it works and what the potential looks like.”
Local hero Nyck De Vries, who claimed the 2020/2021 Formula E title with Mercedes and currently competes in the championship with Mahindra, threw his weight behind an FE race at home in Zandvoort.
“I would welcome a Dutch race on the calendar very much,” said the four-time FE race winner. “I think it would be great to actually race in the Netherlands.”
The Dutchman finished the 2024/2025 Formula E season eighth overall in the title standings on 92 points, just one behind Jake Dennis in the Andretti Porsche.
