Brooklyn Beckham joins Formula E as an Evo Sessions driver
Brooklyn Beckham has been announced as one of 11 celebrities set to try their hand at Formula E racing.
The 25 year-old- son of David and Victoria Beckham has joined the electric motorsport series’ ‘Evo Sessions’ programme alongside 10 other celebrities including Manchester City striker-turned-influencer Sergio Aguero, and Emily in Paris star, Lucien Laviscount.
The Evo Sessions programme is designed to bring the championship to a wider audience, and over a six-week period will test whether the participants have what it takes to become a professional Formula E driver. Evo Sessions will be broadcast across various social media channels, and reach its crescendo at a competitors-only race in Miami on March 5-6.
Beckham, along with the other celebrities, will be paired with one of Formula E’s manufacturer outfits, meaning he will be paired with one of the drivers from either Porsche, McLaren, Jaguar, Maserati, or Nissan.
Combined, those participating in the Evo Sessions have a combined social media presence of over 300 million.
Speaking about the opportunity, Beckham told Hello Magazine: “I’ve loved motorsport all my life. When the opportunity came to be a part of Evo Sessions with Formula E, I jumped at the chance.
“I love it as a sport, but it’s an incredible opportunity to actually get behind the wheel and experience what it takes to compete at the top level of motorsport.
“The performance of the cars is insane,” he added. “I’m pleased I’ll be learning from the best in how to get the most out of them.”
A current Gen3 Evo Formula E car has a top speed of 200mph, and can sprint from 0-60mph in 1.82 seconds; 30% faster than a current F1 car.
The Evo Sessions has split the Formula E fanbase, with detractors saying that the use of influencers to boost the sport’s profile will diminish its credibility. Formula E chief executive, Jeff Dodds has dismissed any suggestion, saying that the social media-based programme is “not a gimmick”.
“They are masterful at creating compelling video content,” Dodds told BBC Sport.
“Collectively they have around 300m followers on social media, so bringing this product to that audience has to be a good thing for the sport.
“It’s not a gimmick because it’s the real car on a Grade 1 racing track. They’ll be on the track individually, which is a much safer environment. It also gives them the opportunity to push the boundaries as far as they’re comfortable. This will be a case of how brave are they? How far are they prepared to push the car?
“The main ambition is to show the difference between someone learning to drive these cars and the gap between them and elite drivers.”
The next round of the 2025 Formula E season takes place in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, over the weekend of February 14-15.
