All-electric Ford Mustang Mach-E outsells petrol-powered Mustang in 2024

The Ford Mustang Mach-E EV outsold its petrol-engined counterpart in the United States for the first time in 2024.

Throughout the year, the Blue Oval shifted a total of 51,745 Mustang Mach-Es in its home country – a year-on-year increase of 26.9%. In contrast, sales of the petrol-powered pony car fell 9.5% to 44,003 units.

Alongside the Mach-E SUV, Ford’s EV range recorded strong sales figures across the board. A total of 33,520 F150 Lightning pick-ups were sold throughout 2024; a 38.3% jump on the previous year. The E-Transit van sold 12,610 units, a 64.4% increase.

Ford’s 2024 performance placed it fourth in terms of battery electric vehicle (BEV) sales behind Tesla, General Motors, and the South Korean trio of Hyundai/Kia/Genesis.

According to Cox Automotive’s preliminary estimates, Americans purchased 16 million new cars in 2024. Around 1.18 million of these were EVs; a 9% increase on 2023.

Japan’s Nissan and Subaru also posted positive trends, with the former selling a total of 31,024 electric cars. Sales of the Nissan Leaf jumped to 11,226 – a 57% increase over 2023 – while figures for the Ariya were similarly positive with a total 19,798 deliveries made. Again, this is a 47% hike on the previous year.

Subaru, one of the smallest carmakers in the US, sold a total 12,447 units of its dedicated EV, the Solterra. This number is a 40.3% rise over the previous year, and comprises 1.9% of all Subaru models sold Stateside.

Both Volkswagen and Stellantis struggled in terms of EV sales. The German giant shifted 17,021 of its ID.4 SUVs – a 55% drop on 2023 – and just 1,162 of its retro-inspired ID.Buzz microbuses, which came to market later in 2024.

Stellantis-owned Fiat fared much worse after selling just 970 of its new 500e BEVs. Despite accounting for 0.07% of all US Stellantis sales, it represents a significant increase on the 12 Fiat 500s sold the previous year.
