Supermarket chain Lidl has announced a price cut on EV charging costs for its rewards customers.
Drivers who use the Lidl Plus app will enjoy a new rapid charge tariff of 59p/kWh – down from 62p/kWh. Lidl estimates this could save drivers around £4 per session or £529 per year.
Motorists without the Lidl Plus app will continue to pay 72p/kWh for charging.
Lidl was the first supermarket to integrate EV charging payments into its rewards app, and says it is able to offer the savings because, unlike other supermarket operators who work with third-party suppliers, it owns its chargers outright.
At the same time as announcing the price cut, Lidl also confirmed a major expansion of its charging network. Between September and the end of the financial year, it plans to invest £10 million in new infrastructure. It will install 100 new rapid chargers at existing stores as well as installing chargers at “the majority” of its new stores.
Currently, one in three Lidl stores around the UK offers EV charging and collectively in the past year its network has delivered an estimated 49m miles of electric motoring.
