VW riffs on heritage with launch of limited edition ID.3 GTX Fire & Ice

Volkswagen has drawn on its past by reviving its cult Fire & Ice nameplate for its all-electric ID.3.

The VW ID.3 GTX Fire & Ice will go on sale in the UK from August 7 with a starting price of £48,360. The first Fire & Ice VW was a limited edition 1990 Mk2 Golf co-developed with luxury German clothing brand, Bogner.

Like its predecessor, the ID.3 Fire & Ice is finished in a striking ultra-violet metallic, and comes with a period Fire & Ice logo on the roof spoiler as a nod to the original. In 2023, VW previewed a show car version of the ID.3 Fire & Ice at the annual ID. meeting in Locarno, Switzerland.

To bring the Fire & Ice design into the 20th century, the ID.3 GTX gets a geometric F+I pattery on the C-pillar, striking 20-inch, two-tone purple and silver Locarno alloy wheels, and roof strips in red anodised paint. Puddle lights in the door mirrors represent fire on the passenger side with a flame logo, and ice on the driver’s side with a juxtaposing snowflake.

At the back, VW’s latest LED tail lights have been tinted exclusively for this model.

Inside, the Fire + Ice theme continues. The passenger headrest is blue, while the driver’s is orange. Both seats are finished in the style of a Bogner padded jacket, and the steering wheel, instrument panel, door trims, and mats are finished with coloured stitching and logos.

Despite the aesthetic changes, the ID.3 GTX Fire & Ice remains a regular ID.3 GTX in terms of performance. Its rear-mounted, 79kWh battery can take up 185kW worth of DC charging, meaning it can be charged from 10 percent to 80 percent in around 26 minutes. Total range is 367 miles.

In terms of firepower, the ID.3 GTX Fire & Ice retains the standard GTX’s 322bhp, 402 lb ft of torque, and 0-62mph time of 5.7 seconds. The GTX has an improved chassis set-up over the standard ID.3 thanks to uprated stabilitsers and adaptive chassis control.

When it comes to market, just 1,990 ID.3 GTX Fire & Ice models will be produced to reflect the production year of the Golf with the same moniker.

Regarding the revival of the Volkswagen/Bogner partnership, VW marketing and aftersales board member, Martin Sander, said: “The response to last year’s show car was overwhelming. Many Volkswagen fans expressed a strong desire to see this car enter series production, and we were only too happy to make that wish a reality.

“The ID.3 GTX Fire & Ice demonstrates the emotive appeal of our premium sports model, while also carrying a piece of Volkswagen history into the electric future.”

Bogner managing director and chief brand officer, Daniel Hiendlmeier, added: “The revival of the cooperation between Volkswagen and BOGNER FIRE+ICE after more than 30 years, and the realisation of a series production model, is a major milestone for us.

“What started as a show car has become a market-ready vehicle that will excite both fans of the iconic Golf Mk2 Fire and Ice and a new generation. It is a strong statement for the relevance of connecting fashion and mobility.”

When it goes on sale, the VW ID.3 GTX Fire & Ice will not be eligible for Volkswagen’s newly-announced £1,500 EV discount.
