Openreach signs myenergi home charger deal for thousands of engineers

EV charger manufacturer, myenergi, has signed an agreement with Openreach to provide the broadband giant’s engineers with thousands of its ‘zappi’ smart chargers.

Openreach, the UK’s largest wholesale broadband network operator, boasts the country’s second-largest commercial vehicle fleet. The deal will allow its engineers to charge their work vans at home overnight and take advantage of low-cost charging rates.

The myenergi zappi chargers have a maximum charging speed of up to 22kW, and can be integrated with solar power and off-peak tariffs offering overnight charging for as little as 7.5p per kilowatt hour.

UK fleets cite a lack of charging as the biggest obstacle in switching to an EV and the new partnership aims to ease that difficulty for thousands of Openreach engineers. In July this year, the Arval Mobility Observatory barometer found that 39% of UK fleets it asked reported a lack of charging at employees’ homes.

On the back of the announcement, Judy O’Keefe, Openreach’s fleet director, said: “We’re making strong progress on our journey to net zero, having invested in more than 5,000 electric vans and more than 2,500 home chargers already.

“Switching the majority of our fleet to electric by 2031 is a big challenge but this partnership is another important step – giving our engineers smart, reliable charging at home to support a greener future.

“We’ve also introduced an incentive programme to encourage smarter charging habits, focusing on home charging and using selected public chargepoint operators. These incentives range from behind-the-barrier access to night-time discounts and driver perks.”

Myenergi CEO, Andrew Clint, added: “We’re delighted that Openreach staff will soon be charging their new plug-in vehicles with zappi chargers. Transitioning such an extensive fleet is no mean feat, but developing the necessary infrastructure to ensure drivers can charge up at home is a huge step forward.

“With zappi, staff will benefit from one of the world’s smartest EV chargers – simple, intuitive and specifically designed to streamline the home charging process. Thanks to the myenergi app, you can control zappi, and the wider myenergi home energy management system (HEMS), with the touch of a button.

“It’s another important part our mission to accelerate the UK’s transition to sustainable transport and our commitment to powering the future of fleet electrification.”

The new agreement is part of parent company BT Group’s drive to reach net zero carbon emissions by 2031.  Earlier in 2025, the BT Group ordered 3,500 all-electric commercial vehicles. To-date, this is the UK’s largest commercial EV purchase. By the the time the delivery is completed in 2026, BT will have a total of 8,000 EVs across its company-wide fleet.
