Omoda&Jaecoo hits ZEV mandate target in first year of UK sales

Chinese dual-brand Omoda&Jaecoo has revealed that it was among the few car makers which hit its ZEV mandate targets through vehicle sales.

The newcomer, which officially launched in the UK in August 2024, registered a total of 3,383 vehicles across the country, with 22% of buyers opting for its all-electric Omoda E5 SUV.

This means that the Chery-owned manufacturer meets the sales requirements set out in the UK government’s Zero Emission Vehicle (ZEV) mandate which came into law in 2024.

The mandate outlines that carmakers must sell a percentage of ZEVs each year. In 2024, that figure was 22% and is set to increase to 28% in 2025. By 2030, 80% of new cars and 70% of new vans sold in the UK must be zero emission. The threshold will increase to 100% by 2035.

Manufacturers who fail to meet the mandate will either be fined £15,000 per-car, or will have to ‘trade’ certificates with peers who have met the target.

The dual brand is one of many Chinese manufacturers arriving in the British market, with Omoda&Jaecoo having already opened 71 dealerships in the UK. By March 2025, it is set to open a further nine.

Priced from £33,055, the Omoda E5 is driven by a 204bhp motor and uses 61kWh blade battery sourced from Chinese automotive giant, BYD. The blade battery is recognised as one of the world’s safest batteries, and was named ‘Innovation of the Year’ by Electrifying.com in 2023.

In the case of the Omoda E5, its blade battery returns a range of 257 miles. The car can accept up to 80kW of charge, with a 30% to 80% top up possible in just 28 minutes.

Alongside the Omoda E5 and its ICE sibling the Omoda 5, the Omoda 9, Omoda 7, and Jaecoo 5 are scheduled to arrive in the UK later in 2025.
