New Mazda EZ-60 EV squares up to Tesla Model Y

Mazda has unveiled its new EZ-60 SUV in China, which could enter the UK market as an all-electric alternative to the CX-60 SUV.

Mazda has yet to reveal the EZ-60’s full technical specifications. However, the EZ-60 has been developed with Changan, and will used the same underpinnings as the Chinese manufacturer’s Deepal S07 SUV. For reference, the S07 comes with an 80kWh battery, and a 214bhp motor on the rear axle providing a 295-mile range.

The EZ-60 isn’t the only Mazda to be developed in conjunction with Changan. The upcoming, all-electric 6e saloon is built on the same platform as the Deepal SL03. Given both the EZ-60 and 6e are part of the brand’s transition to electrification, they share a refreshed version of the Japanese carmaker’s ‘Kodo’ design language, which first debuted in 2010.

Like the 6e, the EZ-60 gets an LED lightbar joining the daytime running lights below the front panel. However, the EZ-60 gets a more prominent chin spoiler, featuring what appear to be faux air dams housing the front indicators. The rear C pillar is not to dissimilar to that of the current Mazda 3 hatchback, albeit in an elongated form.

Mazda did not provide any information on the EZ-60’s interior, but it is set to be revealed at Auto Shanghai, beginning on May 2.

Unlike the 6e, which is set to arrive in the UK later in 2025, Mazda has not confirmed whether the EZ-60 will make it to British shores. Were it to, it would significantly bolster the Japanese carmaker’s EV portfolio and sales following its decision to axe the MX-30 crossover in April this year.

Mazda recently announced that it would be pivoting to an aggressive electrification strategy, despite resisting in recent years. By 2030, it aims to have electric-only vehicles comprising between 25% and 40% of its line-up. Unlike the EZ-60 and 6e, these will be built in Japan and use locally-made Panasonic batteries.
