New Be.EV charging hubs power up Northumberland tourist locations
Northumberland is set to benefit from three new ultra-rapid electric vehicle charging hubs, installed in a bid to drive sustainable tourism.
The sites, which will bring a total of 18 new ultra-rapid devices, are located close to key tourist attractions, including Hadrian’s Wall, Bamburgh Castle and the Northumberland coast.
The new hubs mark the beginning of a partnership between charging specialist Be.EV and development company Advance Northumberland. They are intended to provide both residents and visitors to the region with convenient access to ultra-easy, ultra-rapid charging with added amenities.
The sites come at a time when the region is making a broader effort to enhance its green infrastructure and support its eco-tourism industry.
The first hub, at Tyne Valley Retail Park is already live, with the sites at Ramparts Business Park Berwick and Manor Walks Shopping Centre both due to open by March 2025.
The partners behind the new hubs say they are all strategically positioned near major transport routes, making them ideal for both ‘on-the-go’ charging for travelers passing through and convenient ‘dwell’ charging for those visiting nearby retail parks and attractions.
Tyne Valley Retail Park, near the A69, offers a convenient stop for travelers heading to Vindolanda, one of Britain’s most visited Roman archaeological sites, just south of Hadrian’s Wall. Ramparts Business Park, just off the A1, provides access for those exploring the Northumberland coast and Bamburgh Castle. Manor Walks Shopping Centre, located by the A1 and A189, is ideal for visitors heading to Tynemouth and surrounding coastal areas.
Asif Ghafoor, CEO of Be.EV. said: “These new hubs mark a milestone in Northumberland’s journey toward a sustainable future. Our mission is to make EV charging simple, accessible, and integral to the travel experience.
“By creating hubs in community-focused locations, we’re not only promoting sustainable travel but also supporting local businesses and enhancing the quality of life for residents.
“Drivers can conveniently recharge their vehicles while shopping, dining, or exploring nearby attractions, encouraging longer visits. Northumberland’s iconic locations, from Hadrian’s Wall to Kielder Forest, are now more accessible than ever to eco-conscious travelers.”
Lee Farrier, head of commercial and workspace at Advance Northumberland, added: “This partnership is about much more than EV chargers. It’s about preparing Northumberland for the future while delivering tangible benefits for our communities.
“From supporting eco-tourism to helping residents embrace low-carbon transport options, these hubs are a vital part of our region’s green strategy.”
