Microlino Spider targets US EV buyers with topless reveal in Brussels
Swiss EV firm Micro has unveiled an open-top ‘spider’ version of its all-electric Microlino microcar.
The Microlino Spider was revealed at the Brussels Motor Show but is aimed specifically at buyers in the United States. Micro says it is currently seeking partners stateside such as dealer networks and leasing firms to bring the car to the US market.
In Europe, the car – a rival to the Citroen Ami Buggy – will be sold via Micro’s 100-strong dealer network across the continent.
Unlike the standard Microlino microcar where access to the cabin is gained via a front door, the Microlino Spider has open sides. It will be available as completely topless or with a fabric roof for sun protection.
In a throwback to microcars of the 1950s and ‘60s, the car gets wooden accents on the steering wheel and doorsills. A paint scheme that switches between blue, green, and purple tones affords the car a modern aesthetic.
With the midsized 10.5kW battery, Microlino claims that its Spider will return up to 177 miles of range. Like the rest of the models in the range – the standard Microlino, the Lite, and the Spiaggina – the Spider can be fully charged using a standard home charger in four hours.
At launch, Micro chairman, Wim Ouberter explained the rationale behind the brand’s decision to expand into the US EV market.
“Americans don’t just drive large cars. In fact, the US is the world’s biggest market for golf carts, where they’re often used for personal transport within neighbourhoods,” he said. “That’s exactly why we created the Microlino Spider.
“Consider it the antithesis to massive electric pickup trucks. It’s not built for the 5% of trips where you need to haul a lot, but for the 95% of trips where you are alone, driving to work.”
Micro has yet to announce any dimensions or pricing for the upcoming Spider. However, the standard car can accommodate two passengers and offers 230 litres of baggage space.
