East Midlands named UK’s cheapest region to buy used EVs

The East Midlands is the cheapest place in the United Kingdom to buy a used EV, according to used car market experts Marketcheck.

New data shows that pre-owned EVs in the East Midlands have an average last-listed price of £21,213. Meanwhile, the equivalent vehicles for sale in Greater London are the most expensive, coming in at £24,514.

Marketcheck’s findings showed that the North East is the second cheapest place to purchase a used EV with an average price of £21,224, while Wales ranks third on £22,054. The South West and Yorkshire and Humber rounded out the top five with mean asking price of £23,164 and £22,572 respectively.

The data showed that second-hand EV prices are equalising nationwide. In June 2023, the North West was the most expensive place in the country to purchase a used all-electric car thanks to an average cost of £32,260. Scotland was the cheapest at £25,666. Fast-forward two years, and the price gap has narrowed from £6,954 to £3,301.

As well as being the cheapest place to buy a used EV, vehicles in the East Midlands underwent the biggest price drop nationwide in 2025. Since January, purchasing costs have reduced by 18.69% from £26,088 to their current level. Greater London is the only area in the UK where prices have risen. At the start of the year, the average price of a used EV was £22,600. It has since grown by 8.47% to £24,514.

Alastair Campbell of Marketcheck UK commented: “Our latest data reveals significant regional shifts in the used EV market, with the East Midlands emerging as the most affordable place to buy a used electric vehicle. At just over £21,000, it’s well below the national average – and a full £3,300 cheaper than in Greater London, where prices have actually risen this year.

“What’s particularly striking is the narrowing of the price gap across the UK. Just two years ago, regional differences were far more pronounced, but we’re now seeing a more level playing field emerge. This points to growing maturity in the used EV market and broader nationwide adoption.”
