bp pulse and Moto to bring ultra-rapid megawatt truck charging to key UK motorways

bp pulse and motorway services operator Moto are working together to introduce megawatt charging sites for electric trucks, beginning at three of the UK’s primary motorway corridors.

The initial megawatt charging sites are Lymm Services on the M6, plus the Toddington North and Toddington South services on the M1. Each location will have six pull-through bays compatible with CCS and MCS standards with the first site planned to open in 2026. By 2030, a total of 300 bp pulse charging bays at 23 Moto locations are planned for completion.

The premise behind the megawatt charging sites is to enable ultra-fast charging at scale and meet the growing demand for electric truck charging. Already in 2025, Amazon has added 140 all-electric eActros 600 EVs to its fleet, while the championship-winning Mercedes AMG Petronas Formula 1 team used the very same truck to transport its race-winning cars to the British and Dutch Grands Prix.

Moreover, the megawatt charging locations support bp’s aim to build a publicly accessible network of multi-energy truck hubs across the Trans-European Transport Network (TEN-T) routes. These hubs seek to integrate reliable, ultra-fast charging infrastructure with amenities from Moto, who has invested heavily in EV infrastructure across its 70 UK sites.

By 2030, Moto aims to install up to 300 charging bays for electric HGVs at 23 strategic locations nationwide. Its CEO, Ken McMeikan, said: “I am really excited about our plans with bp to provide electric charging stations for heavy goods vehicles (HGVs). At Moto, we’re committed to leading the way in enabling the UK’s electric mobility. By partnering with bp pulse, we are delivering the infrastructure and innovation electric fleets need, making our vision for long-haul electrification more practical and accessible.”

Jo Hayward, bp’s mobility and convenience vice president, added: “We’re committed to helping fleet operators transition to EV trucks and that means delivering the infrastructure they need where they need it. Our partnership with Moto is a perfect fit: the team shares our focus on making electric truck charging as convenient as possible for our customers, and providing them with a brilliant experience. Together, we’re making it easier for fleet managers to keep their electric trucks moving with less downtime, lower emissions and a clear path to an electric future.”

The bp pulse and Moto hubs will also support electric trucks coming to the UK from continental Europe, with bp’s fuel and charge card enabling seamless payment across both locations.

In 2023, bp opened its first designated European e-truck route launched across six sites in Germany, spanning a 600 kilometre (373 mile) stretch of the Alpine Corridor from Rotterdam in the Netherlands to Genoa in Italy.

On the back of the bp pulse/Moto sites’ Euro integration, Nigel Head, vice president of bp pulse’s European e-truck operations added: “This is a natural next step in our ambition to support fleets as they transition to electric trucks. We’ve proven in Germany that this model works, and now we’re applying that same expertise to the UK. Moto’s locations offer an ideal foundation, with strong motorway access and a customer base that will serve both UK and European freight operators.”
