Not for Eu(rope): All-electric Ford Bronco New Energy available in China only
Ford has unveiled a new, all-electric Ford Bronco manufactured exclusively for the Chinese market.
Officially named the ‘Ford Bronco New Energy’, this full-sized SUV is described by Ford China as “the most beautiful square box” and is a result of the Blue Oval’s joint venture with the Chinese-owned Jiangling Motors Corporation Group (JMGC).

The Ford Bronco New Energy is powered by a BYD-made 105kWh battery pack, and returns a range of 404 miles on the Chinese CLTC cycle. It is also reported to be capable of ultra-fast charging. The 271bhp powertrain prioritises lower speeds and urban surroundings. Unlike most other similar-sized SUVs, the electrified Bronco is expected to be front-wheel drive only.
Measuring slightly more than five metres long and just under two meters wide, the Ford Bronco New Energy is 250mm longer than a new Land Rover Defender but marginally narrower. Like the new Defender, the all-electric Ford Bronco gets a car-like unibody construction, as opposed to the rugged ladder frame underpinning its American cousin.

When it comes to looks, the New Energy is still very much a Bronco. However, this all-electric version has been adapted to its target market. It’s squarer than the US car, benefits from a new headlight and grille setup, plus there’s a slim grille beneath the lip of the bonnet.
Ford China hasn’t provided any interior pictures of the Bronco New Energy. Nonetheless, it promises a “smart cockpit” with “multiple scene modes such as naps, pets, and camping overnight.” Given the Chinese market’s preference for big tech, plenty of screens can be expected with more than 30 high-precision sensors and cameras confirmed for assisted driving.
In addition to the full EV version, Ford will also offer the Bronco New Energy as a 241bhp plug-in range extender. The battery is downsized to 43kWh and is quoted to produce an all-electric range of 143 miles. The unit is paired with a 1.5-litre four-cylinder petrol motor. When combined, the REX version of China’s Bronco has a 758-mile range.
