Mahindra racing lands Mexico City podium as Mortara showcases Gen3 evo progress

Mahindra Racing delivered its strongest result of the young season at the Mexico City E-Prix, with Edoardo Mortara claiming a hard-earned second place to secure a podium for the only Indian team on the ABB FIA Formula E World Championship grid.

Mortara’s drive was a clear statement of intent from the Banbury-based outfit, highlighting both his measured racecraft and the growing competitiveness of Mahindra’s GEN3 Evo package. The Swiss-Italian driver kept sustained pressure on the leaders throughout the closing stages, eventually finishing runner-up behind Nick Cassidy of Citroën Racing, with reigning world champion Oliver Rowland taking third for Nissan Formula E Team.

The result marks a sharp turnaround from the season-opening São Paulo E-Prix, where Mortara finished outside the points after struggling to unlock performance over a single lap and in race trim. In Mexico City, however, Mahindra looked far more assured, particularly in energy management and long-run pace – two areas that have proven decisive in the GEN3 era.

Mexico also reinforced the competitive depth at the front of the field. While Cassidy’s victory sent him to the top of the drivers’ standings, the tight margins between the leading cars underlined how quickly the competitive order is evolving as teams continue to refine their GEN3 Evo hardware and software packages.

After two rounds, Cassidy leads the championship on 40 points, ahead of Jake Dennis on 36 and Rowland on 34. Mortara’s podium lifts him to fifth overall on 18 points – a solid platform as Mahindra looks to build momentum in the early phase of the season.

Points in Formula E are awarded to the top 10 finishers, with 25 for a win, 18 for second and 15 for third, rewarding consistency as much as outright pace across the 17-round calendar.

For Mahindra Racing, a founding team of Formula E, the podium also reinforces the championship’s wider role within the Mahindra Group. The series continues to act as a global technology testbed, feeding directly into the group’s ‘Race to Road’ philosophy, where learnings from electric racing inform the development of future electric passenger cars and SUVs for India and international markets.

The all-electric paddock now heads to the United States for round three, with the Miami E-Prix scheduled for January 31 – a race that will provide the next key benchmark for Mahindra’s GEN3 Evo progress as the season gathers pace.
