Extreme E: Rosberg Racing makes it two from two in Ocean X-Prix
Rosberg Racing secured another win in the Extreme E Championship, coming out on top in a dramatic ending to the Ocean X-Prix in Senegal.
Drivers Johan Kristofferson and Molly Taylor pipped the Veloce Racing team to the line in a two-horse final after Lewis Hamilton’s X44 Team and Jenson Button’s JBXE came together and brought on a red flag.
The X44 Odyssey 21 electric SUV came into contact with Molly Taylor of Rosberg Racing in the first corner of the final, bringing the teams’ final to a premature end. JBXE’s race ended soon after with the car falling victim to the bumpy nature of the shoreside circuit.
The race was restarted with just Rosberg Racing and Veloce Racing taking part, and it was much more straightforward this time round with the former easing to a win by a margin of 14 seconds.
JBXE was awarded a third-place finish having completed more of the circuit than the X44 team which was resigned to a fourth place finish. It was a disappointing end to the weekend for X44, having topped the timesheets at the end of Saturday’s qualifying runs across the 12-kilometre circuit in Lac Rose.
It was an action-packed day of racing that began during the semi-final stages. Christine GZ of XITE Energy Racing and Veloce Racing’s Stephane Sarrazin stole the show in the last semi-final as the two tussled side-by-side on the penultimate corner of the circuit, with the latter coming out on top.
Kyle LeDuc of Segi TV Chip Ganassi Racing also earned many plaudits for his bold two-in-one overtaking manoeuvre in the Shootout, but unfortunately, it wasn’t enough to earn his team a spot in the final.
The weekend in Senegal was the perfect advert for the revolutionary electric racing series, with the result extending Rosberg Racing’s lead at the top of the Extreme E Championship.
The Extreme E series heads to Greenland next for the Arctic X-Prix which will take place on 28th – 29th August.
