Aventon Pace 4 Review: A smarter cruiser with real commuter potential

Aventon’s new Pace 4 isn’t a dramatic reinvention of its popular urban cruiser—but it doesn’t need to be.

Instead, it builds intelligently on a proven platform, adding improved security, a slicker ride, and a refreshed design that pushes the boundaries of what a modern step-through eBike can be.

I’ve tested the Pace 4 over a week in real-world conditions and found it to be one of the most tech-savvy, well-balanced commuter cruisers on the market in 2025.

Design: Light, low, and a little stretched

Weighing in at 53 lbs, the Pace 4 is lighter than its predecessor, making it more manageable for city riders. Its new BMX-style handlebar and elongated top tube give it a youthful edge but also stretch out the riding position. Taller riders may love the extra reach, but those expecting a relaxed, upright cruiser may want to consider swapping the fixed stem or adding spacers.

The step-through frame improves accessibility and ease of mounting, and colours like Blue Steel, Mica, and Flint give riders a mix of bold and muted options. The matte finish and minimalist branding keep it stylish without shouting.

Ride Quality: Comfortable, with muscle in the right places

The 500W rear hub motor (peaking at 864W) delivers smooth, quiet power. The addition of a dual-sided torque sensorbrings a big upgrade to ride feel—power delivery now responds proportionally to pedalling effort, which makes acceleration feel intuitive and connected.

The suspension seatpost, plush saddle, and lock-on grips help soak up urban bumps. On steep hills, throttle-only performance can lag, but pedal assist in Sport or Turbo mode handles inclines up to 12% with surprising ease.

Range: Lower voltage, smarter efficiency

Aventon has moved from a 48V system to a 36V, 20Ah battery (720Wh). While that may seem like a downgrade on paper, the real-world performance tells a different story. Thanks to better motor efficiency and a lighter build, we logged up to 70 miles in Eco mode—on par with or better than many 48V competitors.

The battery is seamlessly integrated into the frame and charges quickly, maintaining a clean look and balanced centre of gravity.

Smart Security: The Pace 4’s standout feature

Where the Pace 4 really shines is in its built-in tech. Aventon’s new Control Unit (ACU) brings 4G connectivity, real-time GPS tracking, geofencing alerts, and remote locking—all controlled via the Aventon app.

The smart rear-wheel lock immobilises the bike when armed, and motion sensors can alert you if someone tampers with it. These are game-changing features for urban riders leaving their bikes parked for long stretches.

The new BC147 display is stylishly retro—reminiscent of early 2000s MP3 players—but the small font might be a challenge for older riders or those in bright sunlight.

Components: Practical and proven

The Pace 4 is fitted with a dependable Shimano Altus 8-speed drivetrain, which performed smoothly after some minor tuning. Tektro hydraulic disc brakes with 180mm rotors provide reliable stopping power, and 27.5 x 2.1” Innova commuter tyres with reflective sidewalls roll quietly and confidently on pavement.

A 48T chainring, flat pedals, and three-piece crank round out the spec—nothing flashy, but all solid and commuter-ready.

Sizing, accessories, and customisation

Available only in a step-through frame, the Pace 4 comes in two sizes: S/M (4’11”–5’7”) and L/XL (5’7”–6’1”). Mounting points for racks and fenders are standard, but Aventon has focused on universal accessory compatibility rather than Pace-specific add-ons—a smart choice for riders looking to customise.

Verdict: Smartly evolved, not radically reimagined

The Aventon Pace 4 doesn’t reinvent the commuter eBike—it refines it. With upgraded tech, excellent range, and understated design, it brings real-world practicality and security into sharper focus. Its stretched geometry won’t suit every rider out of the box, but with minor adjustments, it can easily become a daily go-to.

If you want an eBike that’s commuter-ready, thoughtfully connected, and stylish without being showy, the Pace 4 delivers solid value at a competitive price.

Final Rating: ★★★★☆ (4.5/5)

Best for: Urban commuters, tech-focused riders, and anyone seeking security and range in a low-maintenance cruiser.
