MG4 Urban revealed as new entry-level EV

MG will launch an all-new “supermini” next month as it continues to expand its EV line-up.

The MG4 Urban is scheduled to go on sale in February and appears set to go head-to-head with the likes of the Renault 5, Citroen E-C3 and BYD Dolphin Surf as well as incoming models such as the Nio Firefly.

Despite carrying the MG4 name, the MG4 Urban is a completely new vehicle built on an entirely different platform. It will sit beneath the updated MG4 – also arriving in February – rather than replacing it.

Confirming the car’s impending arrival, MG described it as a “new B-segment MG hatchback designed specifically as an electric vehicle for towns and cities. Built on a new platform to enhance efficiency and range, it expands the successful MG4 lineup and offers even more choice”.

Technical details for the MG4 Urban haven’t been confirmed but the car appears to be a European-market version of the all-new MG4 released in China last year. Images and videos from EuroNCAP testing show what appears to be an identical model to the 2025 Chinese car being put through various crash tests.

Confusingly, while MG calls the MG4 Urban a city-ready B-segment car, the Chinese model is 4.4m long – 40cm bigger than the Renault 5 and 10cm longer than the current MG4.

However, Chinese technical specifications place it beneath the current European MG4. In China, the MG4 Urban is sold with a 161bhp front-mounted motor rather than the MG4’s rear-mounted 168bhp unit. It also uses a 42.8kWh battery offering up to 272 miles of range on the lenient CLTC test cycle.

The current MG4 already offers more power, bigger batteries and longer range and these are all expected to be boosted further with the 2026 update.

Given its positioning beneath the MG4 and expected rivals, the MG4 Urban is likely to cost from around £25,000 when it arrives in February.

The MG4 Urban was one of two new EVs hinted at by the brand in late 2025, when it revealed its product strategy. Alongside the Urban, MG confirmed another brand-new model will arrive later in the year, positioned between the MG4 and the MGS5 SUV.
