BYD extends battery warranty on EVs and hybrids

BYD is extended the mileage on its battery warranty to offer owners added peace of mind.

The Chinese new-energy giant, which recently overtook Tesla as the world’s largest EV brand, is boosting cover from 93,200 miles (150,000km) to 155,000 miles (250,000km) with immediate effect.

The BYD battery warranty extension applies across all European markets, including the UK and means BYD will guarantee the high-voltage drive battery in all its EVs and hybrids to maintain at least 70% state of health until the end of the warranty period.

The warranty period itself remains at eight years, but the additional mileage makes it among the most generous offerings.

Tesla currently offers an eight-year 110,000-mile warranty on all its models while Toyota offers an unrivalled 10-year, one-million-mile warranty, and guarantees its batteries to 90% state of health. Most other manufacturers offer cover for 100,000 miles and eight years – a time frame required by legislation.

The new warranty extension will apply to all new BYD EVs and hybrids sold but will also be automatically applied to all existing models, meaning current BYD owners also benefit from the change. The only exception is the BYD ETP3 van, which is only available in mainland Europe.

BYD says that after intensive endurance testing, its innovative blade battery has been proven to exceed 3,000 charge and discharge cycles, with a service life equivalent to more than 745,500 miles.
