Fastned continues UK expansion with North East charging hubs
European charging network Fastned has completed work on two new charging hubs as it continues its UK expansion.
The two sites in England’s North-East provide 18 ultra-rapid drive-through charging bays and take to 13 the number of Fastned locations in the region.
The first site near Callerton Parkway Metro station opened on December 16 and offers 12 drive-through bays under a full canopy, just one Metro stop from Newcastle Airport.
The new North Moor Road, Sunderland hub opened on December 22 and six charging bays. The hub also includes brand-new Costa Coffee and Greggs outlets offering refreshments to drivers.
Netherlands-based Fastned opened its first UK site in 2019 in West Wear Street, Sunderland in 2019 and now has more than 30 locations around the country offering charging speeds of up to 300kW.
Councillor Martin Gannon, cabinet member for transport at the North East Combined Authority, said: “We are thrilled to welcome Fastned’s ultra-rapid charging hub to the North East. As more drivers look to transition to electric vehicles, it is crucial that we have the infrastructure to support and encourage this.
“This eye-catching and striking charging hub, located conveniently on a Metro line and near the airport, will allow more people to pull in, charge, and get back on the road. We are leading the way in installing new charge points across the region, and welcome this latest addition as the North East becomes the home of the green energy revolution.”
Tom Hurst, UK Country Director at Fastned, added: “Our first airport location at Newcastle International Airport is an exciting milestone and with a new Sunderland hub too, this is a big step toward a future-ready UK charging network.
“These hubs are now fully operational and form part of our growing network of 13 sites in the North East, already supporting hundreds of thousands of charging sessions, helping people travel sustainably across the North East. So, whether you’re heading to the airport, visiting family and friends, or heading further afield to explore seasonal events such as local markets, or simply going about your day, there’s now faster, greener charging options available.”
