It’s back: Lexus LFA returns as all-electric supercar

Lexus has confirmed that its iconic LFA will return as a full EV based on parent company Toyota’s newly announced V8-driven GR GT.

Rejecting any suggestion that any future LFA should be petrol-powered, Lexus stressed that “the model name LFA is not bound by internal combustion engines,” and affirmed the electrified car will share its “light, high-rigidity all-aluminium body frame” with its Toyota-badged cousin.

The electric Lexus LFA measures up at 4.7 metres long and two metres wide and will adopt the same software-defined, steer-by-wire approach as its RZ. The LFA will also carry over the mid-sized SUV’s yoke in place of a steering wheel.

The Japanese carmaker said that the electric LFA will be “centred on the three key elements of a low centre of gravity, low weight with high rigidity and the pursuit of aerodynamic performance.”

It also promised that its answer to the likes of the Aston Martin DB12 and Bentley Continental GT will go beyond customers’ expectations and create a “sense of unity between car and driver.”

Technical details and an arrival date for the electric LFA are unconfirmed. However, Toyota has said that it plans to fit its first solid-state battery to one of its performance-focused EVs within a couple of years, suggesting the LFA could be the car to debut the tech.

The next-generation LFA is a sign that following some initial hesitancy, Toyota is fully embracing electric vehicles, and its EV lineup already comprises the Urban Cruiser and the bZ4X, with the Tesla Model Y-rivalling CH-R+, bZ4X Tourer, and electric Hilux scheduled for arrival next year.

Lexus has adopted a similar approach, and in addition to the RZ and electric LFA, its upcoming ES will be available with an electric-only drivetrain when it arrives in 2026. At this year’s Tokyo motor show, Lexus also revealed its LF-ZC and LF-ZL concepts, which respectively hint at a future all-electric saloon and range-topping SUV.
