Porsche set to field two factory Formula E teams from Season 13

Porsche Motorsport has announced a major expansion of its commitment to the ABB FIA Formula E World Championship, confirming that from Season 13 (2026/27) it intends to run two factory teams under its own marque.

The move marks one of the most significant developments in the all-electric racing series and reinforces Porsche’s long-term investment in electric motorsport as it looks ahead to the next-generation GEN4 era.

The German manufacturer — crowned Season 11 (2024/25) Manufacturers’ World Champion — will field two additional Porsche 99X Electric cars alongside its customer team, meaning three teams on the grid will run Porsche powertrains from 2026 onwards. The expanded line-up will further consolidate Formula E’s competitive field at the dawn of an era that will feature confirmed entries from Jaguar, Nissan, Stellantis and Lola Cars.

Porsche’s decision strengthens both the depth and stability of the championship, and aligns closely with the company’s strategy of accelerating its race-to-road technology transfer. Innovations developed in Formula E — including advances in direct oil cooling and energy recuperation — have already been moved into Porsche road cars such as the Cayenne, demonstrating the direct performance benefits of competing in electric motorsport.

Porsche joined Formula E in Season 6 (2019/20), and its factory team has since secured 13 race victories, 32 podiums, a Drivers’ World Championship, a Teams’ World Championship, and its first ever Manufacturers’ World Championship in July.

Thomas Laudenbach, Vice President of Porsche Motorsport, said the expanded programme reflects the company’s heritage and future ambitions: “Motorsport shapes our brand. Our heritage in traditional motorsport is unique, and in the future we want to be able to say the same about electric motorsport. Formula E offers an attractive balance between effort and return and enables us to develop technical solutions relevant to our production sports cars. This expansion will also help us nurture new talent at all levels.”

Laudenbach added that Porsche intends to establish a degree of independence for the additional team rather than simply scale its existing presence. “Next year marks 75 years of Porsche Motorsport — a success story we intend to continue with new chapters from electric motorsport.”

Formula E CEO Jeff Dodds welcomed the announcement, describing Porsche’s expanded investment as a measure of the championship’s strength: “Porsche acquiring an additional licence from Season 13 demonstrates significant confidence in Formula E. The brand has been integral to the series since 2019 and has delivered teams’, manufacturers’ and drivers’ titles. With major performance advancements coming in GEN4, the 2026/27 grid is already looking exceptionally strong.”

Season 12 of the ABB FIA Formula E World Championship begins in São Paulo, Brazil, on 6 December.
