Polestar CEO: New Polestar 2 will live on as all-electric fastback
Polestar CEO, Michael Lohscheller, has confirmed that the Swedish performance EV brand will launch a new version of the Polestar 2 as a fastback-style saloon, quashing rumours that it will be replaced by an SUV crossover.
Since going on sale for the 2020 model year, Polestar has shifted 180,000 2s, making it the most popular model in its line-up alongside the Polestar 3 and Polestar 4. While a new Polestar 2 will not arrive for at least another couple of years at the earliest, Lohscheller told Drive that it will not be replacing the “P2” with an SUV as it seeks to retain or re-attract buyers of its bestseller.

“Let’s word it like this: I want to have those current Polestar 2 customers back,” Lohscheller said. “I want to have those, because we built it up [the customer base]. I think we did a great job, and I want to keep them in the family.”

Lohscheller’s comments contradict those of previous Polestar boss and Volvo designer, Thomas Ingenlath. Towards the end of 2023, Ingenlath said “we will not replace the Polestar 2 with a Polestar 2,” suggesting that its would be ditched in favour of a similar-sized SUV crossover.
Now, however, Lohscheller’s words seem to indicate that Polestar’s smallest SUV – set to be called the Polestar 7 – will sit alongside the new Polestar 2.
Upon arrival in 2028, the Polestar 7 will be built at the the Volvo factory in Kosice, Slovakia, and share the same electrical architecture as the upcoming all-electric Volvo EX60. The next generation of Volvo’s best-selling, mid-sized SUV will be the first Volvo to be built on its scalable, EV-only SPA3 platform. SPA3 was developed independently from Geely, the Chinese automotive giant which owns both Volvo and Polestar.
Despite the Chinese-built Polestar 2’s initial popularity amongst EV buyers in the United States, tariffs and price challenges contributed to Polestar losing $1.03 billion over Q2 this year. Due to a 100% import tariff slapped on all Chinese-made cars by the Trump administration, the Polestar 2 was taken off sale earlier this year stateside.
While Europe makes up 77% of all Polestar sales, the US comprises just 8%. What’s more, European sales in Q2 2025 were up 38% year-on-year with 18,049 cars sold.
